    Initially, the CAC will be responsible for the selection of a qualified firm to assist with the design for the public spaces of Heart of the City. Once the firm has been selected, the CAC will be responsible for communication, community engagement, collaboration on design concepts, and reporting key milestones to the DMCC board and city of Rochester throughout the 2016 design process.

    A mere two block walk north of the Mayo Clinic in downtown Rochester, Minnesota brings visitors to Heritage House Victorian Museum and a trip to another century. This Italianate home, built in 1875 for Rochester merchants, was the jewel of what then was called “Lower town."

    Have you ever wondered “How much does an eagle weigh?” “How big is their wingspan?” The answers await you in these engaging and entertaining live eagle programs. Through hands-on and interactive teaching our staff of naturalists will share the biology, ecology and natural history of bald and golden eagles. All of our presenters are knowledgeable, engaging and eager to share their passion for eagles with visitors of all ages.

    The Arts and Cultural Initiative is a newly formed corporation which has come forth from the Rochester Arts and Cultural Collaborative (RACC). The ACI is an offshoot of the Spaces Committee , of the RACC , which has consistently focused on meeting the space needs of the arts and cultural community of Rochester. The need for arts and cultural facilities is clear from numerous studies, surveys, and focus groups. Our vision is for a vibrant, multi - use facility which will serve both the arts community (of all types) and the diverse cultural communities of Rochester. There is a large pent up demand for reasonably priced space and we hope to fulfill it.

    City of Rochester is looking into various options for the preservation of Chateau Theater. This has been approved as a DMC Project. The historic theater was constructed in 1927 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

    Building owners Hunter and Traci Downs is renovating the 115-year-old downtown Rochester building to help inspire economic activity and preserve local history. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the building is slated to eventually be home to Area 10 Labs, Brandhoot, a business incubator, a "maker space" and a future restaurant.

    Destination Medical Center Corporation (DMCC), in collaboration with the City of Rochester, Minnesota (City), is pleased to issue this Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for Public Space design services for the public spaces associated with the Heart of the City Sub-District of the Destination Medical Center development plan. DMCC and the City are collaborating on the redevelopment of Rochester pursuant to the vision and principles of the Destination Medical Center development plan. Within this plan is a sub-district referred to as Heart of the City. Heart of the City is a 9-block area of downtown Rochester bounded by Center Street to the north, 3rd Street to the South, Broadway to the East and 2nd Ave to the West. Heart of the City is home to the world-renowned Mayo Clinic and its Cesar Peli- designed Gonda Building, the recently renovated Peace Plaza, numerous hotels, shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues. The purpose of this RFQ is to outline the nature of the design challenge and to solicit qualifications from interested public space design firms/teams.

    Rochester is a growing community and that growth is anticipated to continue. Growth and change presents both opportunities and challenges. Long-range planning is needed to position the City to address its long-term needs; to be resilient; to support changing demographics; and to address housing demand, multi-modal transportation needs, growth in jobs and visitors, and more; while working with finite resources. Rochester’s long-range planning effort, referred to as “Planning to Succeed” or P2S, will update the City’s Comprehensive Plan.

    Within this landscape, I am documenting the old and new. The project is a record of this time of change, and my contribution toward weaving the stories of new Minnesotans into our welcoming but wary culture. I am making photographs of Minnesotans in small towns across the state, which will be paired with my subjects’ stories and personal histories. The photographs include the Americans of European ancestry I grew up with and immigrants from the Somali, Mexican and the Hmong diasporas, among others.TBD

    The project is planned for Black History Month (February) 2019. It will utilize seven components to illustrate, educate, and allow visitors to vicariously experience discrimination and racism. The planned components are: 1) two full-size diorama displays, 2) a video history of travel-related discrimination experienced by Rochester residents, 3) an exhibit of Floyd Cooper’s art, 4) a personal appearance by Floyd Cooper, 5) commercially-produced videos relating to The Green Book, 6) interactive digital displays, and 7) the history of racism in Rochester, Minnesota.
